Full artist bio
I am drawn to the random beauty of natural objects and the precision of geometry. I am inspired by and embrace randomness – in nature, events, encounters, and mistakes. I believe that “A mistake is just an opportunity for a rapid design change.” My designs are original, hand-crafted, and sometimes whimsical but they all have a story behind them.
I grew up in Chattahoochee, a small town in the panhandle of Florida. My Grandfather lived a few miles away in a small community – Flatcreek. My family has lived in this area of north Florida since the state was opened for homesteading. “Flatcreek” symbolizes the center of who I am. My concepts of goodness, faith and beauty are rooted in the stories and places in and around this tiny community. My studio name honors this deep connection.
I earned a BS in Art Education and Crafts Design from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. I have continued to learn through classes and workshops at Boston University, University of VA, Arrowmont, John C. Campbell Folk School, Shakerag, as well as from individual teachers.
My family and I lived in Huntsville, AL for over two decades where the original “Flatcreek Studio” was established in a 100 year old log cabin. In 2013, (after nearly 30 years of teaching art), I retired and followed my husband and best friend to Bay Saint Louis, MS. Flatcreek Studios – “deep south” - is now in another 100 year old home.
